The Green Citadel is a building designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser in Magdeburg. It was completed in 2005. It is about the last project on which Hundertwasser worked before his death.
Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser, (15.12.1928 - 19.02.2000) was an Austrian painter and architect. Born Friedrich Stowasser in Vienna, he became one of the best-known contemporary Austrian artists, although controversial, by the end of the 20th century.
The ground floor of the Green Citadel has several shops, a cafe, a restaurant and a Hundertwasser shop where information about the artist is also available. In the building there is also a hotel and a 'kindergarten'. The majority of the house is used as living space.
The building houses a large number of trees. Some were planted on the roof, a few have their roots on the outside walls of the apartments. These so-called "tree tenants" are taken care of by the tenant and are maintained by them.
After the completion of the building it is expected if possible not to interfere any more in the external condition of the house. With the growth of the trees and the fading of color, etc. the house will change accordingly and this will give it a sense of age.
